“Moonrise Kingdom”
Two pre-teens fall in love and run away together into the woods. As the entire island searches for them, a storm brews off the coast.
The buzz: Wes Anderson fans should be excited. Not only is the screen play that off-kilter, strange humor that everyone has learned to love, but the cast list is speckled with hard-hitting names. Edward Norton plays a strange Boy Scout leader, Bill Murray is the girl’s slightly off father. Bruce Willis is the town sheriff. Combine that with the genius writing of Anderson and you have a cult classic waiting to happen.
Showing at: Maiden Alley Cinema
Length: 94 minutes
Show times: 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Friday, 4:30 p.m. 7 p.m., and 9 p.m. on Saturday and 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday.
“Ted”
A man and his talking bear best friend must overcome separation anxiety in order to grow up and move forward in life.
The buzz: Four months ago, when the trailer for “Ted” first came out, the entire Paducah Sun newsroom passed it around to watch. The buzz is there, they’ve built up a following. Make sure to bring someone who is not afraid of crude humor.
Showing at: Cinemark
Length: 106 minutes
Show times: 12 p.m., 2:35 p.m., 5:10 p.m., 7:45 p.m., and 10:20 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“Magic Mike”
A foray into the world of male strippers, from the women they meet to the after parties and everywhere in between.
The buzz: I don’t even think I have to review this one. I haven’t met a woman yet who isn’t interested in seeing it. I haven’t met a man who hasn’t written it off. It’s a girls’ weekend out, I guess.
Showing at: Cinemark
Length: 110 minutes
Show times: 12:10 p.m., 2:45 p.m., 5:20 p.m., 7:55 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection”
A Wall Street banker is put in Madea’s care while the government investigates a scandal at his firm.
The buzz: I never like these movies, but somehow they always do well at the box office. Madea is made for the big screen, or so the numbers say. It’s played out, to say the least.
Showing at: Cinemark
Length: 114 minutes
Show times: 11:20 a.m., 2 p.m., 4:40 p.m., 7:20 p.m., and 10 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“People Like Us”
After his father dies, a man must bring part of the fortune that was left behind to his sister, whom he has never met.
The buzz: Both Elizabeth Banks and Michelle Pfieffer steal the show here — Banks playing the alcoholic sister and Pfieffer the widowed mother — but Chris Pine isn’t hard to watch either. “People Like Us” won’t make it to the top of the box office charts, but it’s an endearing and powerful story nonetheless.
Showing at: Cinemark
Length: 115 minutes
Show times: 1:45 p.m., 4:25 p.m., 7:05 p.m., and 9:45 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
