The state of Kentucky was all abuzz this weekend with two teams from the Commonwealth featured in high-profile match ups.

The Kentucky Wildcats lost 73-72 at Indiana’s Assembly Hall on Saturday for their first loss of the season. The 9-0 Hoosiers hit a last second 3-point shot to win the game. The Wildcats lost their No. 1 national ranking, falling to No. 3 in both the coaches and the AP poll. Syracuse, at 10-0, is No. 1. Louisville also played Saturday, beating Farleigh Dickinson 80-58. The Cardinals are 9-0 this season.

Murray State traveled Sunday to play at No. 21 Memphis, where the Racers beat the Tigers 76-72 at the FedEx Forum. The Racers are 10-0 under first-year head coach Steve Prohm, and Monday, were ranked No. 24 in the AP poll. It’s the first national ranking for the Racers since the 1997-98 season.

The three ranked teams in Kentucky — Kentucky, Louisville (No. 4) and Murray State — are a combined 27-1 so far this season.

Baylor wins first Heisman

Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III received the most votes and won the coveted Heisman Trophy, awarded to the best college football player each year. Griffin helped bring Baylor, typically one of the worst teams in the Big 12 Conference, to national prominence, helping the Bears to a 9-3 record and one of the greatest seasons in school history.

Pujols leaves St. Louis

Ending long negotiations, St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman Albert Pujols signed to play with the Los Angeles Angels for a $254 million contract. Pujols, considered one of the best players currently in baseball, helped the Cardinals to two World Series victories in his time in St. Louis.
