The thought that every little bit helps was apparent during this year's Lions Club/WPSD Local 6 Telethon of Stars. The 55th annual event, held at the Luther F. Carson Four Rivers Center over a span of 15 hours, raised $330,000 which will benefit Easter Seals of West Kentucky, Easter Seals of Southeast Missouri, T.LC. of southern Illinois and Community Developmental Services of Martin, Tenn. Freddie Hicks is one of the telethon's most visible supporters. Hicks, known as "Dancing Freddie," dances each year outside Kroger at Hannan Plaza to raise money for the telethon. This year, Hicks raised a career-high $8,100. In 11 years, Hicks has raised $63,000 for the telethon. The telethon pledge amount is down from 2010 when the event raised $540,227, but donations will be accepted until Jan. 31. Since the telethon began in 1957, it has raised more than $23 million to help developmentally disabled children and adults. Veterans honored On Friday, the U.S. celebrated and remembered all who have served or sacrificed in the nation's military during Veterans Day. Paducah marked the day with a parade, one of the biggest the city has seen in recent years as far as participation, featuring 40 floats, bands and groups. Beshear wins re-election In Tuesday's election, governor Steve Beshear won Kentucky's vote to serve another term as governor. Beshear, a Democrat, beat out Republican candidate David Williams, who is currently serving as the state senate president, and Independent candidate Gatewood Galbraith. Beshear won with 56 percent of the vote while Williams was second with 35 percent of the vote. Teen of the Week Maci Fletcher is the Mid-Continent University Teen of the Week. The senior at Heath High School has a cumulative 3.96 GPA and plays soccer for the Lady Pirates, as well as basketball and golf. Fletcher, who is a member of the Friends of Rachel Club, would like to study engineering at the University of Kentucky.  In May, a Teen of the Year will be chosen from the weekly winners, earning either a four-year scholarship to Mid-Continent or a $2,500 scholarship to the school of their choice.
