Cardinals on top

The St. Louis Cardinals have taken one more step in their miracle postseason by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 12-6 Sunday night to claim the National League pennant. The win puts the Cardinals in the World Series, which starts Wednesday with a game against American League champion Texas Rangers.

The Cardinals have been a longshot to even make the playoffs all season thanks to some early season injuries and poor play during the regular season. The Cardinals were 101⁄2 games behind the wild card qualifying spot on Aug. 25. But in the final games of the season, the Cardinals surged while the Atlanta Braves, which led for the wild card spot, collapsed.

It’s the Cardinals’ first appearance in the World Series since 2006 when they beat the Detroit Tigers for World Champion bragging rights.

Wheldon dies after tragic crash

The racing world lost another star when IndyCar Series driver Dan Wheldon, 33, died as a result of a 15-car crash at the series’ final race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday. Wheldon was a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500 and was running near the back of the pack when he was caught up in the fiery wreck with just 12 laps completed in the race. The race was canceled after the incident.

Rams still winless

The St. Louis Rams still have trouble scoring and it showed in a 24-3 loss at the undefeated Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The Rams had more first downs, more total yards and led on time of possession, but had seven penalties and plenty of mistakes in the red zone.

Racers win with comeback

The Murray State Racers football team was down 27-17 going into the fourth quarter of its Homecoming game against Eastern Illinois, but scored 19 straight points to win the game 36-27. Running back Mike Harris rushed for 133 yards and scored four rushing touchdowns which ties a school record. For his efforts, he was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week.
