When people watched Robert Redford calm horses and woo Kristin Scott Thomas in 1998, they fell in love. “The Horse Whisperer” featured a barely known Scarlett Johansson and made women everywhere purchase a rowdy horse.
“Buck” doesn’t have Redford or Johansson. The only love story it has is between Buck Brannaman and his horse. But what “Buck” does have on its side is the truth.
The movie chronicles Brannaman’s travels around the country to “help horses with people problems.” Brannaman shows his true colors as a compassionate healer who transforms horses and the people he works with.
If Redford’s portrayal of Brannaman melted your heart, the documentary will certainly bring back that feeling. Brannaman is a lonesome cowboy, but what he does with horses is truly magical and unique. Not only does the movie show how he works with horses, without any pain involved, but it shows how Brannaman’s past influences the way he communicates with horses.
While the movie focuses on horses, it is very much about people. Brannaman likes to say, “The horse is a reflection of your soul,” which means sometimes he becomes a therapist as well. The movie is truly inspiring, and can teach everyone — horse lover or not — how to live life differently.
