I get it. This past weekend was the pinnacle event for the movie industry. I watched the Oscars and I have seen all of those movies that were nominated and won big.

But let’s get real. Movies like “The King’s Speech” and “Black Swan” were interesting and deep, but they didn’t get your heart pumping. We are only months away from the best time of year as far as I am concerned: the season of summer blockbusters.

We spend our winter tackling more thought-provoking and artsy concepts like the creation of Facebook, stammering and ballet eating disorders, but what we really yearn for are the summer months, where every week brings a multi-million dollar barnburner.

This summer has excellent potential, even if it is just in the sequel category. Just in May alone, there are scheduled release dates for “The Hangover 2” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” Then throughout the summer, there are the releases of “X-Men: First Class” and the second part of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” I think we can all agree that another installment of “The Hangover” is just what we need in our lives after a cold, miserable winter.

One of the must-haves for a summer movie box office are comic-based movies, and this season won’t disappoint. A staple this summer is another “Transformers” movie, but there are also plenty of newcomers on the horizon.

Take for example “Thor,” or even go a little further into summer and sneak a peek at “The Green Lantern” or “Captain America: The First Avenger.” All have the three main things a summer blockbuster needs: Action, a gorgeous leading man, and a great plot that is guaranteed to bring people in.

Even families can spend a lot of time at the theater this summer. There are plenty of animated and family-friendly movies that are coming out, including the sequels to “Kung Fu Panda” and “Cars” and even a remake of “Smurfs.” I may be in my mid-20s, but I am immensely excited for “Winnie the Pooh.”

These are the types of thoughts that I have to keep close to me in these winter months, when I am forced into weeks of movies like “Drive Angry 3D” and “Battle: Los Angeles.”

These are the trailers and previews that get me through going to the movies and having to chose between a movie headlined by Mary Kate Olsen and another about a foul-mouthed alien.

Every day we wake up, it’s getting warmer. The days of flip flops are right around the corner and, thankfully, so are the days of worthwhile movies.
