WKCTC presents the Chicago Comedy Company today
West Kentucky Community & Technical College will host “Laugh Out Loud with the Chicago Comedy Company” at 7:30 tonight at the Clemens Fine Arts Center. The nationally touring company will perform improv and sketch comedy.
The company will also hold free workshops today. The workshops will include a beginning improv session from 9:30-11:30 a.m., along with both advanced improv and sketch comedy sessions from 12:30 to 3 p.m.
Tickets to the show are $10 for students and children, $20 for adults. They can be reserved at artsinfocus.org or purchased at the door. Contact Gail Robinson Butler at 270-534-3213 to reserve a spot in the workshops.
National Quilt Museum debuts 2 exhibits
The National Quilt Museum will feature two new exhibits through April. The “Quilts of the Rocky Mountain West” and the “School Block Challenge” debuted Feb. 25.
“Quilts of the Rocky Mountain West” features the work of quilt guilds from Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. The “School Block Challenge” is the culmination of a school contest aimed at showing students how to quilt at an early age. A reception for the winners will be held 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the museum.
Market House to hold fundraiser auction Friday
The Market House Theatre will hold its third annual Curtain Call Auction on Friday. The fundraiser allows people to bid on cameo roles in a one-night production of “Annie.”
Up for bid are roles as Annie, Daddy Warbucks, FDR, Miss Hannigan, orphans and Sandy the dog. There are also several “Annie”-themed packages up for auction, including a vacation to Florida, boat trips, and tickets to plays at Market House Theatre and the Carson Center.
The auction will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Market House Theatre. Food and drink will be available. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Market House box office.
Students to play Munchkins at Carson Center
“The Wizard of Oz” is coming to the Carson Center on March 11 and 12, but the national tour will feature local children in some of the most beloved roles: The munchkins.
The 12 students hail from the Academy of Movement and Performing Arts in Paducah, and will learn about choreography and what it is like to perform with an acting company.
Wizard of Oz will show at the Carson Center on March 11 at 7:30 p.m. and March 12 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets for all three dates are $34 and are for sale at the Carson Center box office or thecarsoncenter.org.
Blues Bonanza announces lineup
The Southern Illinois Blues Society has announced the lineup for its March 18 concert in Carbondale, Ill. Among the performers at the Southern Illinois Blues Bonanza are Alex Kirt, King Jiba and the Ivas John Band. Other guests include Martin “Big Larry” Allbritton and Richard “Rip Lee” Pryor.
The concert will begin at 9 p.m. March 18 at the Hangar 9, 511 S. Illinois Ave., in Carbondale. Tickets are $5 for society members and $7 for others. For more information, check out siblues.com.
Paducah Symphony, Market House receive grant funds
State Sen. Bob Leeper and state Rep. Brent Houseman presented a check to the Paducah Symphony Orchestra and the Market House Theatre as part of a grant awarded by the Kentucky Arts Council.
The Kentucky Arts Partnership grants provide support to nonprofit arts and cultural organizations. They focus on organizations that provide year-round activities. The symphony received $20,560, the Market House $19,044.
Artist to hold watercolor workshop March 14-16
Jane Angelhart, whose art is featured in “The Best of Watercolor by American Artist Magazine,” will hold a workshop in her downtown studio. The workshop will concentrate on taking photos for watercolor portraits, as well as color theory and many other techniques.
The workshop will be held 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. March 14-16 at A.I.R. Studio at 621 Madison St. in Paducah. Tickets are $275. Anyone interested in attending should call 303-910-3739 as space is limited.
Market House Museum opens with Civil War exhibit
A 10-year search for relics in Graves County near the site of Camp Beauregard has culminated in a new exhibit debuting at the William Clark Market House Museum in Paducah.
Artifacts include heel taps, pocket watches, lamp parts, horse harness, buttons, molten lead from bullet making, lead melting pots, and silverware. Other items include carved lead bullets (made by a bored soldier, no doubt,) state belt buckles, military state buttons and a wisdom tooth.
The museum, 121 S. Second St., will open for the season from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. The museum will also offer free admission March 12 to kick off the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
MSU offers violin recital Tuesday
The Murray State University Music Department will host a guest-artist violin recital Tuesday at the Performing Arts Hall, beginning at 6 p.m.
Brandon Christensen, violin professor at Southeast Missouri State University, recently returned from a sabbatical in Beijing, where he performed with members of the Beijing Sinfonietta. He has brought two of those musicians to the United States this spring for a series of recitals, including this one at Murray. He will be joined by pianist Shen Yue, who in addition to managing the Beijing Sinfonietta is a chamber music fellow at the Royal Conservatory of Music in London, and by the Sinfonietta's concertmaster, Jin Haiyin.
The program will include “Sonatas by Beethoven and Elgar,” as well as a set of light pieces including “Monti's Czards” and a piece composed by Jin's grandfather, Yanping Jin. The recital is free.
