Reports: Gillespie headed to Marion

-- Staff report

Several media outlets reported Tuesday night that former Marshall County boys basketball coach Gus Gillespie has been hired as the new boys skipper at Marion (Illinois) High School.

Gillespie spent the past 13 seasons at the head of the Marshals before being released on March 23. He went 293-119 at Marshall County and won region titles in 2011 and 2012, but the Marshals were knocked out of the Fourth District Championship by Calloway County this past season before falling in the opening round of the First Region Tournament.

The longtime coach is no stranger to southern Illinois, as he's a native of Lawrenceville and has held coaching positions at Centralia and Robinson high schools before taking on the job at Marshall County in 2004.

Gillespie replaces Dave Brown, who resigned after one season. The Wildcats went 16-13 in 2016-17, winning the Pyramid Plus and West Frankfort Mid-Winter Classic tournament titles. But they went 2-8 in the South Seven Conference and fell in the semifinals of the Carterville 3A Regional to Benton.

Some information in this report came from The Daily Republican in Marion, Illinois.
