OWENS CROSS ROADS, Ala. -- Murray State's Lucila Puente Rodriguez was named the 2016-17 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year for women's golf. The award, along with the All-OVC and All-Newcomer squads, were announced Monday evening at a banquet following the first day of play at the OVC Championship.
The OVC Player and Coach of the Year awards will be announced Wednesday afternoon following the final round of play at the championship, which is being held at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove in Owens Cross Roads, Alabama (just outside Huntsville).
Puente Rodriguez is the third overall Murray State player to be named Freshman of the Year and first since 2011 (Delaney Howson). The Sevilla, Spain native netted four top five finishes in 10 events this season, including a trio of third-place finishes. Entering this week she ranked fourth in OVC in stroke average (74.3)
The All-OVC team included Puente Rodriguez and four players who were All-OVC selections a year ago in Murray State's Moa Folke, Morehead State's Anna Magnusson, Jacksonville State's Valentina Giraldo and Eastern Kentucky's Sofie Levin. Also selected were Eastern Kentucky's Elsa Mobley, Murray State's Linette Holmslykke, Jacksonville State's Karina Kukkonen, Tennessee Tech's Allyson Dunn, Morehead State's Ana Dieguez, Austin Peay's Taylor Goodley.
Puente Rodriguez, Mobley and Holmslykke, each All-OVC selections, headlined the five-person All-Newcomer squad. The trio was joined by Eastern Kentucky's Samantha Sandland and Jacksonville State's Pia Ohlenbusch.
