Marshall breaks even at Clayton

CLAYTON, Mo. -- Marshall County followed a big low with a big high as it split a doubleheader with Clayton in high school baseball Saturday.

First, the Marshals lost a one-run lead in the bottom of the seventh inning before finally falling 6-5 in eight innings. Lance Dyke drove in a Marshall run in the eighth, but Clayton's Bryant Thompson tied it with his own RBI single in the Greyhound half of the eighth. Blake Bax won it for Clayton with another RBI single. Bax and Thompson each finished with three hits.

That was as far as the Greyhound offense got on the day as the Marshals won the nightcap 11-0. Dawson Smothers went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs for Marshall, while teammate Cole Griggs was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Caldwell 11, Henderson 9 -- In a game where it committed five errors, visiting Caldwell County took advantage of a late Henderson County miscue to emerge with the victory.

In the top of the seventh, Noah Brown hit a grounder to the mound. When Colonel pitcher Brice Shofner misplayed it, Oliver Parker and John Davis scored to break a 9-all tie. Bryce Thomas got the win for the Tigers, as Shane Burns retired the side in the seventh for the save.

Henderson scored four runs in the second inning thanks to three Caldwell errors. The Tigers grabbed the lead in their half of the third with a two-run single by Gabe East and a two-run double from Jase Felker. Dylan Sutton smacked a two-run single in the fifth to get Henderson back in the game.

Seneca 17, CCA 6 -- At Louisville, Community Christian Academy fell behind early and committed 13 errors against Seneca. Dayton McQullian doubled home three runs for Seneca, while teammate Mason Hauger smacked a two-run homer.

For the Warriors, Tim Adrian was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Ethan Miller also drove in a pair of runs.
