Beale seals West Kentucky Amateur for first local win

By ERIC WALKER Paxton Media Group

MAYFIELD -- Going into Sunday's final round of the Independence Bank West Kentucky Amateur, Paducah's Greg Beale was just a stroke off the lead, but a couple of quick birdies set himself in the top spot.

However, it wasn't the ground he gained on Mayfield-Graves Country Club's second and fourth hole par-4s that was key to his championship round. Instead, it was a 10-foot putt for par on the 167-yard third hole that did the trick.

"That kind of settled me down," Beale noted. "I wasn't feeling really good, and if anyone saw me on the practice green, I didn't make a putt. But that got me into the flow of the round."

That eventually flowed into a repeat performance of the 3-under-par 67 he shot in the WKA's opening round Saturday for a two-day 134 total to claim the oldest amateur golf tournament in west Kentucky.

Beale's early birdies, along with two others he made on the back nine, helped him overtake first-day championship flight leader Carter Dodson. He recorded just one bogey Sunday and three over the whole weekend.

Dodson, with a 4-under 66 from Saturday, played steady until he carded a double bogey on the 344-yard, par-4 seventh hole. He rebounded with two birdies, but also made another six on the par-4 No. 15 and bogeyed the par-3 No. 17 to finish with a 75 for 141.

Previous winners Jason and O. J. Lancaster finished in second and third place. Jason Lancaster, who shot an opening round 68, was on par Sunday with his 70 to rally and finish with 138. O.J. Lancaster, who won the WKA trophy in 2015 and 2016, was three shots behind Dodson before finishing with a 71 for his two-day 140 total.

The 2017 West Kentucky Amateur was the first local tournament title for Beale, a former professional golfer on the Canadian Tour who regained his amateur status 10 years ago. He said he doesn't get to play as many tournaments now, so this win carried some weight with it.

"I gave it a little bit of a fist pump on 17. I was pretty excited," Beale said. "It meant a lot to me, it really did. I'm just very fortunate to play it."
