Deck the halls

Story by Kenn Gray Photography by Brad Rankin

Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year, and holiday parties will be upon us before we know it. Deck the halls (and the rest of your home, too!) in festive decorations that will make your home the holiday wonderland that you've always dreamt about.

Fantastic Foyer

Wow your guests before they even step foot in the door. You can make a statement in the entryway by adding a tree. A beautifully placed tree doesn't have to be saved for the living or dining room. They'll forget that they just stood in awe under the mistletoe. They missed the kiss, but they didn't miss the pizazz you provided.

Top Notch Table

I like to decorate the dining room table. Don't just think about going wide; go high as well. Give height to your dishes by stacking cake plates or using mirrored cubes to raise platters. Peak guests interest vertically and horizontally. The earth isn't flat; your table shouldn't be either. Of course, adding an attention-getting centerpiece is key. It doesn't have to be flashy, but it does need to be breathtaking.

Say Cheese!

We live in a world where everyone is tweeting, posting, and instagramming their every move-what would be any different during the holidays? Give them a fabulous backdrop by creating a spot in your home to serve as a hub for photos. Make sure that there is plenty of space as party-goers with selfie sticks need room to move. Real time pictures don't have to be boring, nor do decorations need to be restricting.

All That Glitters Is Not Simply Red & Green

Just because it's Christmastime doesn't mean that you are just restricted to shades of red and green. Use the architecture and color palette of your home to dictate your decorating choices. Decide whether you want your colors choices to blend or whether you want them to contrast. Don't be afraid to be bold and unique! Tradition is wonderful, but you can start your own by thinking outside of the box.

I absolutely love to decorate clients' homes for the holidays. I teach them while I'm decorating. I give them the tools to find their own approach to decorate their home for future celebrations.
