The A-B-Cs of skin cancer

When dealing with skin cancer, the earliest forms of detection can make a world of difference in battling one of the most common forms of cancer.

Jamie Smith, cancer control specialist for Kentucky Cancer Program Purchase District, said there are some simple guidelines for self-checking irregular and potentially dangerous brown spots that could lead to skin cancer, using the “ABCDE” formula.

A — Asymmetry. Is one side of the spot different than the other?

B — Border. Does the spot have irregular or ragged borders?

C — Color. Does the spot have unusual pigmentation?

D — Diameter. Is the spot larger than 6 millimeters or a pencil eraser?

E — Evolving. Does the spot change over time in color or size?

If people do notice any of the signs, they should visit a dermatologist for a screening.
