Born in Muhlenberg County on October 18, 1922, Thelma Marie Moore Harris Peck died at her home on March 9, 2013. In her dying days, she was surrounded by her family. Thelma grew up in the heart of Lone Oak and was a long time member of Lone Oak Methodist Church, which her father helped to build on Friendship Road. As they lived across Lone Oak Road from the Methodist parsonage, many Sunday dinners at her parents’ home included their friend the preacher and his wife.
She married Russell Harris September 20, 1941. Russ and “Pete or Pee-Wee” (his nicknames for her) moved to San Luis Obispo, California, to live and had wonderful times in Los Angeles and enjoyed living by the Pacific Ocean. When the war broke out, they moved back to Lone Oak and Russ joined the Army. They lived in Paducah the rest of their lives, where together they reared two daughters – Janet Carole Harris Farmer and Linda Marie Harris Carroll. After Russ died, Thelma remarried and was happy living in Lone Oak again with Eugene Peck, until his death. Thelma remained a widow until her death, but in her final years, she had the company of her Himalayan cat, Katie, whom she loved dearly.
She was a consummate homemaker all of her life and her life revolved around family. She was a marvelous seamstress and made all of her daughters’ clothing, including coats, until they were in high school. She even made a dress for her daughter to wear to the governor’s inauguration and she continued to sew for her grandchildren. Another talent was her excellent cooking, and Russ cooked right along with her. Shopping for clothes, shoes, purses, and dining out were some of her favorite pastimes. Mimi was dearly loved by her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. She loved being with them and enjoyed our weekly family dinners.
Mimi kept her sense of humor to the end and many of her hospice workers enjoyed her witty company. She will live on in our memories as an elegant, wonderful mother who was loved unconditionally.
Mimi is survived by her daughter, Janet Farmer and her children and grandchildren, Debbie Atwood and her son Chris Baker; David Russell Farmer, and his children, Jennifer and Russ Farmer; her daughter and son-in-law and their children and grandchild – Linda and Neel Carroll, Mindy Carroll and her daughter, Hannah Carroll, and Missy Carroll. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Barclay, and several nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Malchus and Mary Jessie Moore, her brothers, Parris Bohannan, Marlin Moore, and Earl Moore and her sister, Benetta Moore Campbell, her husband, William Russell Harris and his parents, Edward and Mary Eddye Harris, and her second husband, Eugene H Peck, her granddaughter-in-law, Patty Farmer, as well as a number of sisters- and brothers-in-law.
A memorial celebration of her life will be held on Friday, March 15, 2013, at Lone Oak of Milner and Orr Funeral Home from 4:30-7 p.m. A private family burial will take place prior to visitation.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent in the name of Thelma Peck to: Lourdes Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 7100, Paducah, KY 42002-7100.
