Lone Oak tennis continues streak
The Lone Oak girls tennis team won its 25th straight First Region tennis title last week and advanced to sectional play, where Lone Oak beat Daviess County and Caldwell County for a berth in this week’s state tournament. The Lone Oak boys team won its ninth consecutive First Region title and also won in sectional play.
Johnson gives Hendrick Motorsports 200th win
Jimmie Johnson used the last three laps of the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway on Saturday to give Hendrick Motorsports its 200th Sprint Cup victory, breaking his own 16-race winless drought after winning the championship five times. Denny Hamlin was second followed by Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch.
Braves stop Cardinals’ dominance
The defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals were swept by the Atlanta Braves this weekend at Busch Stadium. The Braves won three games, including a 7-4 victory Sunday, after losing seven in a row in St. Louis since 2009. On Friday, the Cardinals organization retired the jersey and familiar No. 10 of longtime manager Tony La Russa. La Russa retired after last season, leading the Cardinals to two World Series championships in his 16 years in St. Louis.
James named MVP
The Miami Heat’s LeBron James was named the NBA Most Valuable Player this weekend, the third time he has earned the honor. He then played every minute of the second half of the Heat’s 95-86 win over the Indiana Pacers in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. As MVP, James scored 26 of his 32 game-high points in the second half, adding a season-high 15 rebounds.
