Kentucky breaks streak
The Kentucky Wildcats football team beat Tennessee 10-7 Saturday in Lexington, breaking the Volunteers’ 26-game win streak over the Wildcats. Kentucky finishes the season 5-7 and for the first time is not eligible for a bowl game. Athletic director Mitch Barnhart issued a letter to Kentucky fans saying coach Joker Phillips will return for another season, despite being on the hot seat much of the season.
Racers win Great Alaska Shootout
The Murray State Racers men’s basketball team lasted through double-overtime to get a 90-81 victory over Southern Mississippi on Saturday and win the championship of the Great Alaska Shootout Thanksgiving tournament in Anchorage, Alaska.
The Racers beat tournament host Alaska-Anchorage and San Francisco on their way to the title game. Racer guard Isaiah Canaan scored 36 points in the final game and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Racer guard Donte Poole was named to the all-tournament team.
Only one remains
Mayfield outlasted Beechwood on Friday night for a 19-14 win in the Class A football semifinal. The Cardinals now advance to the state title game in Bowling Green on Friday morning to play Hazard. Murray lost at home 40-10 to Glasgow, ending the Tigers’ season with a 12-2 record. Murray’s only other loss this season was to Mayfield.
Titans, Rams suffer losses
The St. Louis Rams lost a close won Sunday, losing 23-20 to Arizona at home. The Tennessee Titans also lost 23-17 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
