Maiden Alley offers student film festival

Maiden Alley Cinema will host its inaugural Atomic City Student Film Festival from April 15-17. The weekend will feature screenings of student productions from Paducah and McCracken County schools, from grades 6-12. The films were submitted this month, and jurors will select those to be shown. The winning entry will be shown at the River’s Edge Film Festival in November.

Fantastic Fibers opens Saturday

Fantastic Fibers, an exhibition of contemporary and innovative artwork created with fiber as the primary medium, will open Saturday with a reception at the Yeiser Art Center.

This year’s exhibit offers 58 works by 47 artists, chosen from 432 entries submitted by 187 artists from 23 states, Canada, Japan, France and Qatar. It includes wearable pieces, conceptual garments, stitched X-ray films, lit felt sculptures, and contemporary basket forms. Techniques include embroidery, quilting, felting, tapestry, braiding, weaving, basketry, and a variety of mixed media, non-traditional processes.

A total of $1,750 in prizes will be awarded at the reception, 5-7 p.m. The exhibit runs through April 30.

Etcetera hosting live entertainment

Kindred Folk, a band out of Sturgis, is playing a show at Etcetera Coffehouse, 320 N. Sixth St., on April 9. The band, which features young adults playing Americana bluegrass, will play 7-9:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Yeiser calling for contest entries

The Yeiser Art Center seek entries for the 36th annual Paducah Photo Juried Photography Exhibition. A total of $2,000 in prizes will be awarded, including $1,000 for first place.

Last year, the exhibition received 1,190 photos from more than 400 photographers.

The entry fee is $8. Participants can submit up to five entries before the deadline of April 24. Entries must be digital. For complete guidelines and to submit online, go to paducahphoto.com.

Documentary about obesity coming at local cinema

“Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead,” a documentary of two men’s struggle to lose weight through dieting, will be shown at Maiden Alley Cinema at 7 p.m. April 7. The film takes a look at America’s eating habits and how unhealthy they have become.

Southwestern Illinois Artifact Show has free admission

The second annual Southwestern Illinois Artifact Show, where vendors buy and sell artifacts and spectators can get items identified, will be April 9. Skeet shooting sessions are available for $6, with selling tables available for $15.

The show will be at World Shooting and Recreational Complex, 1 Main Event Lane, Sparta, Ill., 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Admission is free. Contact show host Kyle Wilson at 618-537-6753 for more information.
