METROPOLIS, Ill. — Lester Barger, age 74, a lifelong resident of Metropolis, Ill., passed away at Baptist Health Paducah on Thursday, May 23, 2013.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, 2013, at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Metropolis. Rev. Frank Forthman will officiate.
Lester had worked at Southern Illinois Steel in Metropolis, and retired as a mechanic after 20 years at EEI in Joppa. As a member of the Southern Illinois Washer Pitching Association, he was an avid and competitive washer pitcher. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bird watching, reading his Bible and doing activities with his great-granddaughter. Lester was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Rosalee (O’Brien) Barger; one son, Jeff Barger and wife Jackie of Paducah, Ky.; his daughter, Penny Garner of Antioch, Tenn.; one grandson, Cory Garner of West Chester, Pa.; one very special great-granddaughter, Lillie Garner of Metropolis; and one sister, Ressie Powers of Metropolis. Lester is also survived by two stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Bertha (Brown) Barger; three sisters, Jessie Shelton, Ruth Ramage, and Kathleen Giffin; and one infant brother, Ray.
There will be no visitation. Friends are asked to meet at the cemetery.
