James Edward Smith, 85, of Paducah passed away peacefully at 7:02 a.m. Monday, February 11, 2013, at Baptist Health Paducah.

Mr. Smith was a retired Captain and Shift Commander with the Paducah Police Department. After his retirement, he served as a Security Officer at Western Baptist Hospital during the 1970s, and the Head of Security at Lourdes Hospital during the 1980s. He was a member of Twelve Oaks Baptist Church, a Lifetime Member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and a U.S. Army Air Force veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Lena Marie Smith; his son, Dwight L. (Dee) Smith of Paducah; his daughter, Donna M. (Charles) Boner of Lake Dallas, Texas; his granddaughter, Tina (Robert) O’Brien of Lone Oak; two grandsons, Ryan and Daniel Boner of Lake Dallas, Texas; one stepgrandson, Chuck (Leslie) Boner of Hendersonville, Tenn.; one great-grandson, Michael C. Dillon of Salt Lake City, Utah; two stepgreat-granddaughters, Annalee and Audree Boner of Hendersonville; one special niece, Nancy Shimmel of Tucson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters; and one brother. His parents were William and Lucy Smith.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 15, 2013, at Lindsey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Louis Brinker officiating. Members of the Paducah Police Department will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow at Maplelawn Park Cemetery, with full military honors.

Visitation will be Friday, February 15, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
