“Dark Shadows”
Johnny Depp plays Barnabas Collins, who breaks a witch’s heart and is doomed to being a vampire. He finally wakes up from his sleep in 1972 and must help his new relatives save the family business and learn valuable lessons in the process.
The buzz: Personally, I don’t know what Tim Burton did to Johnny Depp. There were a few movies that I enjoyed, especially “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” but for the most part I have been disappointed. Depp still has the chance to be in movies that actually mean something, that are funny and not the eighth installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean.” If you have the chance to go to the movies this weekend, give Marvel comics your business and see “Avengers.”
Showing at: Cinemark
Length: 113 minutes
Show times: 11:30 a.m., 2:10 p.m., 4:50 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 10:10 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“The Raid: Redemption”
The movie centers around Rama, who hangs back from a covert mission to kill a crime boss. During the mission, his entire team is captured. Rama takes over as the team’s leader and must finish the mission in a 15-story building.
The buzz: I am not one for foreign flicks, but this one is getting a lot of buzz in the film festival world. It also includes a rocking soundtrack scored by Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park and Joseph Trapanese, collaborator with Daft Punk and M83.
