METROPOLIS, Ill. — George R. Sturgeon, 85, of Marion, Ill., formerly of Metropolis, passed away October 31st , 2012, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, November 4, 2012, at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home in Metropolis with Pastor John Holt officiating. Burial will follow at Metropolis Memorial Gardens.

He was born on July 21st, 1927, in Kentucky. He lived in Metropolis most of his life with his wife of 30 years, Nancy, before she passed away in 2007. George was a veteran of the United States Army and worked on the river for over 40 years as a chief engineer.

George is survived by two sons, Robert L. Sturgeon and wife Rhonda of Marion, Ill., and David G. Sturgeon and wife Charlene of Richmond, Ind.; two grandsons, Jonathan Sturgeon and wife April of Marion, Ill., and Jesse Sturgeon of Marion, Ill.; three granddaughters, Natasha Sturgeon and fiancé James Page of Leesburg, Ind., Triniti Baker and husband Louis of Marion, Ill., and Keri Hall and fiancé Rick Lynn of Marion, Ill.; four great-grandchildren, Owen and Lauren Sturgeon, both of Marion, Ill., Lillyana Page of Leesburg, Ind., Hunter Baker of Marion, Ill., and Jaidyn Morse of Marion, Ill.; two brothers, Vernon Sturgeon and Ben Sturgeon; and one sister, Pearl Smoot.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; and his parents, Madie and George W. Sturgeon.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy will be accepted in the form of donations at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. Sunday until the funeral hour at Aikins-Farmer Funeral Home.
