In response to a letter written recently concerning presidential elections, it appears the writer has forgotten that this nation is a republic and not a democracy. He is advocating that we as a nation do away with the Electoral College and adopt popular vote or as some say mob rule to elect the president.
A republic is a form of government that is ruled by a Constitution as we have and a democracy is ruled by a majority. In a democracy the majority would make rules to benefit them at the expense of the minority. So it would be easily seen that a democracy could and would oppress minorities such as people of color, different faiths, sexual preference, etc.
A republic protects those unalienable rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
In a true democracy there would be no legal power that protects minorities. That sounds like tyrannical rule to me. The presidential elections as we saw the last election would be determined by the populated areas in California and New York. Thank God our forefathers had the foresight to see that heavily populated areas could not determine and force their will on an entire nation.
A republic ruled by a Constitution guarantees certain rights to individuals and minorities. We as a nation should never accept mob rule as a way to govern.
God bless America with peace and protection from those who would destroy her.
