Ruth Atherton

GILBERTSVILLE - Ruth Atherton, 90, of Gilbertsville died Saturday, February 8, 2014, at 12:30 a.m. at Parkview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Ruth was born in Livermore, KY., on May 4, 1923, to the late William and Edna King Ridenour. For over 50 years, she was an active member of Oakland United Methodist Church. She retired as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. She was involved with Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Reidland Lioness Club. An avid crafter and teacher of crafting, she owned several shops, including Family Craft in Reidland and Kencraft Gift Shop in the Lakes area. She also enjoyed fishing.

Known as "Mama Ruth" by her loving family, she is survived by two children, daughter, Rebekah Schnuck and husband Don of Paducah; son, Gary Atherton and wife Sara of Friendswood, TX.; grandchildren, Kevin Atherton, Chris Atherton and wife Mary, and Anna Schnuck; and great-grandchildren, twins William and Andrew Atherton and Ava Atherton.

Her husband, W.E. Atherton, preceded her in death in 1998. Her five siblings, Cordelia Hibdon, Kathern Williams, Anna Pearl Schultz, Roy Allen Ridenour and John Leslie Ridenour, also preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Milner & Orr Funeral Home of Paducah with Brother Jim Calhoun officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Kenton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Monday evening from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
