A sunken vessel near Columbus prompted a response Tuesday from the Coast Guard's Unified Command.
Watchstanders on Monday were notified of the vessel Todd Brown, a tug, sinking along the right descending bank of the lower Mississippi River at Mile Marker 940. Todd Brown has about 17,500 gallons of diesel fuel, 150 gallons of lube oil and 150 gallons of hydraulic oil on board, according to a news release from the Coast Guard.
The Unified Command conducted aerial assessments 70 miles downriver and shoreline assessments 6 miles downriver, and crews didn't see any signs of pollution. The UC consists of the Coast Guard, Ingram Barge Company, the Kentucky Department of Environmental Protection and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the release said.
SWS Environmental Services is monitoring the situation, and a boom has been deployed to mitigate a pollution release. The cause of the incident is under investigation, according to the Coast Guard.
