Lourdes to host free colon cancer awareness breakfast

Staff report

Lourdes will be hosting a free colon cancer awareness breakfast from 8-9 a.m. Tuesday in the Lourdes Borders Community Room. Mercy gastroenterologist Ross Jones and Mercy general surgeon David Mauterer will be the guest speakers.

At the breakfast, Lourdes employees will be signing a colon cancer pledge to screen 80 percent of the country by the end of 2018. The public is invited to participate in signing the pledge.

The event is free and open to the public. To RSVP, call 270-415-3915. Attendees can tour the 20-foot long Incredible Colon, which is an inflatable walk-through replica of the human colon.

The Incredible Colon also will be on display at Kentucky Oaks Mall from 7:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday. The Incredible Colon shows examples of polyps, healthy colon tissue and several cancerous diseases of the colon.

Colon cancer is the second-most common cause of cancer death in Kentucky among men and women combined. However, colorectal cancer can be detected early at a curable state, and it can be prevented through the detection and removal of precancerous polyps.
