Burglary suspect nabbed after getaway mower runs out of gas

Staff report

The great escape it was not.

McCracken County deputies said they arrested a Paducah man Sunday afternoon when the lawnmower he was driving as a getaway vehicle from a burglary ran out of gas.

Timothy H. Sams, 25, is charged with first-degree burglary, third-degree assault and resisting arrest.

He made it roughly a half mile before the mower quit, authorities reported.

Deputies said they responded at 3:20 p.m. to an area near Fairview Drive on a report of a suspicious person on a lawnmower. The caller was "alarmed" because the man operating the mower had several firearm cases with him, deputies said.

When found and questioned, Sams allegedly told deputies the various items in his possession, including guns, cases, jewelry, and a wallet, all belonged to him.

But deputies were skeptical. They said the wallet was lifted from a garage at a residence on Gatewood Drive, and other items found with Sams were taken from a residence on Palisades Circle. Deputies said Sams resisted arrest and tried to flee. He struck a deputy in the face, causing a minor injury, they said.

Sams was taken to McCracken County Jail.
