Professor, sports writer attacked

Harlan Daily Enterprise

HARLAN -- A well-known sports writer, photographer and Harlan Daily Enterprise contributor was attacked at his home the morning of April 12, according to a report from the Middlesboro Police Department and WRIL.

Jamie Vaught, who is a professor at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College and has written four books on UK basketball, was awakened along with his wife around 4:30 a.m. by their dog, which was inside, barking at something outside their home, states the report.

Vaught went to his front door and opened it to see what the the dog was barking at. The report states that a male suspect then stabbed Vaught three times in his neck and chest. The two struggled briefly and the suspect fled on foot.

The suspect was later identified as Harold Hatfield, also known as VonRoyce Hatfield, according to reports.

The MPD issued a warrant for Hatfield on Friday charging him with first-degree assault.

Police say Hatfield lives in the same neighborhood as Vaught but they feel he left Middlesboro shortly after the attack.

Vaught talked with WRIL the day after the incident and said he received stitches as a result of the attack, but he is doing well.

"He also says thank you to everyone who has reached out to him during this time and for all the prayers," the report states.

Anyone who sees Harold Hatfield should call 911 immediately as he has been entered into the national "wanted person" database. You can also call the Middlesboro Police Department at 606-248-3636.

Middlesboro Police Officer Joel Quillen is in charge of this investigation. He is assisted by Lt. Tom Busic and Officer Michael Bradley.
