090810_Massacbudget Sunday liquor sales in county offered as means to raise money

METROPOLIS, Ill. — Massac County employees will receive their paychecks this week. The Massac County Commission received about $78,000 from the state, enabling Massac to meet the county’s $97,000 payroll.

The state paid about $54,000 in income taxes late Friday afternoon and issued a $24,000 check Tuesday morning to pay its highway employees working in Massac County, said county treasurer Floyd Sullivan.

090810_Hollenbach_photo3 Kentucky wants to give McCracken countians $4.3 million, and state Treasurer Todd Hollenbach will visit Paducah on Tuesday looking for takers.

It isn’t the state’s money but unclaimed property the state holds because banks, insurance companies and others couldn’t find the owners.

Hollenbach’s “Treasure Finders” program enlists local volunteers to search the register for names they recognize. They then notify people.

090810_Conway_photo2 Law enforcement officials agree that a rising tide of drug-related crimes exists throughout the region.

Commonwealth Attorney Dan Boaz said on Tuesday that about 80 percent of the crimes in McCracken County are drug related. Some crimes are committed to fund drug habits while drug use is a secondary issue in assaults, domestic violence and other types of crimes, Sheriff Jon Hayden said.

090810_Masthay Murray High School graduate Tim Masthay will be kicking in the National Football League this season, joining a list of other players with local ties.

The former University of Kentucky punter made the final Green Bay Packers roster as its punter, wearing No. 8, and will also be the holder on place-kicks.

As a senior at UK in 2008, Masthay averaged 45.2 yards per punt, fifth best in the NCAAs.

090810_CPlant_photo2 Damage to a major fiber-optic cable disrupted operations for some businesses Tuesday.

The cable was cut outside Madisonville, Dialog Telecommunications told the Sun, a customer that lost some phone service. Dialog later could not be reached to elaborate on the problem.

The outage affected service for six carriers, including Dialog, the company told the Sun.

Three of Paducah’s own — Reggie LaFaye, Terry Mike Jeffrey and Eric Horner — will headline the 54th annual “Telethon of Stars” Nov. 13-14 at the Luther F. Carson Four Rivers Center.

LaFaye, known as “Mr. Gospel Sax,” has been a regular on the telethon the past four years. LaFaye, of Lone Oak, has played coast to coast, headlining his own show at Caesars Palace, MGM Grand, Landmark Hotel and the Gold Nugget, all in Las Vegas.
