MURRAY -- The Center for Health and Wellness at Murray-Calloway County Hospital is celebrating the longest day of the year by hosting a Summer Open House event Wednesday, June 21 from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The event is to promote the American College of Sports Medicine's Exercise is Medicine TM initiative. The Exercise is Medicine program is designed to implement lifestyle changes aimed at combating sedentary lifestyle, obesity and other chronic diseases that can be significantly managed or treated by a physically active lifestyle. The program works in collaboration with all health care providers to get more people fighting chronic disease with exercise instead of medication.
The Open House will include a free lipid (cholesterol) and glucose (blood sugar) test. (A 12 hour fast is required for the blood draw. Drinking water or black coffee before the screening is OK). The Kentucky Cancer Program will also be on-site offering free dermascan readings; which allows the user to see sun damage to the skin (note: this is not a skin cancer screening). Screening activities will take place from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
There will be free giveaways at the event and free 10-minute chair massages will be offered from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Visitors who join the Center for Health and Wellness that day will be entered to win either a Sun Dolphin Aruba Sit-in Kayak or a Char Broil Gas Tabletop Grill.
The center itself will be open for tours and information, and the joining fee will be waived during the day. Personal trainers will be available to answer questions about fitness and other topics.
The wellness center boasts state of art cardiovascular equipment, strength equipment and free weights. A gymnasium hosts group fitness classes, while a five-lane pool is available for lap swimmers, aquatic fitness classes and swim lessons.
