Katie Thompson is sure divine guidance led her to become a nurse in the Western Baptist Hospital nursery after a long career in chemical engineering.

“I truly believe God has been orchestrating the last few years of my life,” she said.

Thompson vividly remembers 28 years ago when her son, Greg Bazzell, was born seven weeks prematurely at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville. Seeing nurses provide intensive care for her tiny baby left a lasting yearning to follow in their footsteps.

Health care dominates the list of fastest-growing jobs in Kentucky as the population ages.   

Health care support occupations are projected to grow about 25 percent from 2008 to 2018 — more than three times the average rate for all jobs, the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training says.

The field includes various aides and assistants, medical equipment preparers, and transcriptionists. Those jobs require less education but also pay well below those of the second highest-growth area, health care practitioners and technicians, at 21 percent.
